Dear Friends,
I'm proud to write this support letter to kick off
Aurora Ortiz's 10th Carlsbad Marathon fundraiser! I
know you are familiar with her story. Aurora fell through the cracks, and she
had a rough time, being visually impaired, and not knowing that there was help
for her situation. She suffered through life, working hard to take care of her
younger brothers and sisters.
When Aurora was 55, two close friends brought her
to our Center. A new world opened up for Aurora. She found out that she could
participate in life as a visually impaired woman. A whole new world opened up
for her. Aurora experienced surfing, horse-back riding, running, water skiing,
fishing, bowling, biking, and more. Aurora is so grateful for her new life, that
Aurora dedicated herself to the Blind Community Center.
Aurora is our Vice -President, Volunteer
Coordinator, Renter, and Custodian. Every year, Aurora runs in the Carlsbad
Marathon as a fundraiser. For this year, her efforts will fund our on- going
transportation program.
I hope that you will find it in your hearts to
help Aurora in her fundraising efforts. This is her
10th marathon on our behalf. I know she wants this to
be her best effort. Your gift will enable our participants to enjoy everything
from surfing to Arts and Crafts. Many of our participants would be sitting at
home alone, with no hope of much contact with the outside world. Thank you for
your consideration, and I hope you can support Aurora, “Our Little
Giant”.
Sincerely,
Lee Morton, Executive Director

NOVEMBER 01, 2005
GREETINGS EVERYONE!
Thank you very much for your past support of the Blind Community Center. I am again requesting
Sponsorship for the Carlsbad Marathon held
on January 15, 2006. Although I may face some challenges, as I am Legally blind,
hearing impaired, asthmatic, have a short right leg, and starting on my way to
64 yrs. young, I will be running 26.2 miles, in the 60-64 yrs. age division,
hoping to improve on my previous time.
Why do I run? It isn’t for my health,
physical fitness, or to compete for first place in my division. I do so because
I want to give back to the community. At the age of 55 yrs. old, this Center
opened up a new world unknown to me. A world where I could experience
many social, recreational, and educational programs just like anyone else
that is sighted. I have the support and friendship that gives me a sense of
belonging, and in a family atmosphere. I have gained self-esteem, and independence
that is essential for anyone’s well being. I am not alone anymore!
My Goal: My goal this year is to raise
$25,000.00, as a fundraiser for the Blind Community Center, in order to help
defray our transportation cost which is expensive. This includes the fuel,
insurance, maintenance, repairs, and other. Many of our members do not have
access to public transportation. With your help, many of them may enjoy all of
the programs and activities. And remember, blind people do not die of blindness.
They can, die of loneliness! I survived that loneliness! Can you help me to help
others survive it, too?
The Center has been in existence for 56 years. It
functions through the work and generosity of volunteers that include blind,
vision impaired, and sighted volunteers. Our source of income is solely from
donations from corporations, foundations, bequests, individuals, and fundraising
activities, such as the Carlsbad Marathon. Therefore, I am requesting your
sponsorship so that I can reach my goal in helping the Blind Community
Center.
